Replenishing the Environment
Mining for lignite coal has been a part of the Rockdale area since the early 1900s, although Alcoa's use of these resources did not begin until nearly a half-century later. It was the rich supply of lignite as a fuel source for generating electricity to run an aluminum smelting plant that first attracted Alcoa to this part of Texas.

Best of the Best
Sandow Mine has been designated by the US Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining as "Best of the Best" of all surface mines in the nation for environmental stewardship
Lone Star Award
Sandow Mine has been awarded the "Lone Star Land Steward" award by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for wildlife habitat management
